Fantasy stories often involve feats of engineering, whether they are the vast fortresses of medieval epics, the mysterious engines of steampunk, or even the wholly magical marvels of worlds powered by sorcery. In this panel we'll consider realism vs. verisimilitude, what makes for plausibility in the mechanics of the fantastic, and we'll talk about historical engineering methods from ancient times through the current day that might be transplanted into fantasy worlds with varying levels of technology. We'll also describe some of our favorite examples of fantasy engineering in fiction and cinema.
